Peter Cole

Much of Peter Cole’s new work is from the Packhorse series, where toy horses assume burdens of all kinds.  The horse may be read as a stand-in for nature, and for nature domesticated.  Their various burdens allude to the pressures we put on ourselves with our complicated lives, our nearly-inexpressable histories that form and inform us, and the things we own that we always drag from one place to another.  The repairing and replacement of their legs define a culture of renewal and rehabilitation, diametrically opposed to the dominant paradigm of consume and discard. With their new parts and enhanced capabilities, these animals stride confidently into a new world where they are the masters.
